Whale Fall Communist

We were born out of a whale fall,
Then catapulted back to the surface,
Solely to be sent deep below again,
Never used to light.

Or at least that's what I thought,
Turns out some of you actually suffer,
You like 'em ship propellers to cut you,
Yes, you do.
But I've always been a blind fish.

I don't want to be the one who feeds on a carcass,
Teaching the hagfish to see a more complex picture.
Taking some of those bones to grow them a spine.
In my dreams, we are swimming in the warm seas.

You all just want to eat things,
Jaws so much bigger than bodies,
Nowhere to keep the fat in cold,
Emitting own light.

Or at least that's what I think,
Turns out, I actually don't live on bubbles,
I like to wear a mask down here,
Yes, I do.
But I've always been a lungless fish.

I don't want to be the one who feeds on a carcass,
Teaching the hagfish to see a more complex picture.
Taking some of those bones to grow them a spine.
In my heart, we are swimming in the warm seas.

Illustration of a whale fall by Michael Rothman

Originally titled Whale Fall, then Whale Fall Community, then Whale Fall Communists and then I figured out that only the narrator is a "communist".

In a way, this is a direct opposite of a nasty and odd 2014 poem, Marine Snow. In a way, it's similar to Mental Space Invaders '16.

Hagfish have a jaw, but no spine. Look up species that live in deep, deep waters for other biology-related weirdness. A whale fall is simply a whale that dies and drops to the abyssal zone and is...eaten.
