The Traditional End-of-Year Survey, Year 14

This survey has been going on since 2002, when a friend found it somewhere and posted it on her LiveJournal. A bunch of us tagged along, but I think only I remained at this point, as the two friends who stuck along ended up not hanging with as many foreigners in their latter years.

1. What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before?
- Spent the whole year in an incredibly passive manner. This has never happened before. I was just sitting and watching, most of the time. Granted, a lot of it was reflection, but still, I'm not used to it.

- Admitted a lot of things about myself, to myself.

- Came back to something just when I was about to "leave, forever".

- For the first time, had money to my name throughout all 365 days. Yes, this has never happened before, they were dry periods lasting from a couple of days to a couple of months and I have been working for about a decade now.

2. Did you keep your New Year's Resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
- I can't remember making any out loud in places other than this writing forum I frequent, where I gave up on 1 out 7 and completed the other 6 by the end of August. Maybe I should have.

- For 2016, I have just one. I want to go back somewhere I had not been to in what will be roughly 22 years.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Some online friends did. I'm a big fan of Rania's baby Julia and another baby whose name and gender I didn't check for yet.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Nobody who was actually close to me.

An online friend, eight years my junior, lost both of her parents in less than six months and I feel for her.

The neighbour whose parents died in 2014 followed them, unexpectedly, but he was not a nice person, to put it mildly. There was a point in 2013 when he stopped his car only to shame me for my then-weight, because I was eating a croissant. I just feel for his wife and teenage daughter and what they have to put up with.

5. What countries did you visit?
Slovenia, for less than 48 hours - my friend and I went to see Bob Dylan and we tried to check out as much of Ljubljana as possible. On our way there, we passed through Croatia, so...that counts, too?

6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
Determination and courage. A year of reflection took those two away, though its last three months were marked by incredible assertiveness.

7. What dates from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
August 29th. I don't know how to explain that day.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I'm not sure. My name at the end of Asif Kapadia's documentary would probably count for most people. For me, what counts most is probably various doubts leading to unexpected and expected solutions.

9. What was your biggest failure?
I could have worked a lot more. I just didn't care much.

10. Did you suffer any illness or injury?
I have issues with back pain, but other than that, I don't think I even had a cold this year.

11. What was the best thing someone bought you?
- Early in the year, a friend sent me a drawing of me as an Ewok and a tiny cactus candle.

- In April, one of my closest friends took me to see this blues guitarist, Carvin Jones, as a belated birthday gift. I had not heard of him before, but it was quite a show.

- Around the same time, another close friend brought me a pack of lime green nail polish. I rarely ever wear any, but I have a lot of that colour in my wardrobe, so that was a nice thought.

- For my 32nd birthday, mom got me a pair of those funky Chucks with three zippers on the back. I had not worn Chucks for about 17 years before that.

I didn't get any other gifts from anybody in 2015. I prefer to give than take.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
My friends, they are amazing!

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
A bunch of bigots - some of them priding themselves in being such, so open and liberated - who offended me numerous times and never apologised.

There is somebody whose actions left me with my mouth open, though they did not do anything to me in particular.

14. Where did most of your money go?
It should have gone to paying back remaining people whom I owe for three jobs aborted in 2011, 2012 and 2013. But it went to everyday stuff.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
The Force Awakens. And it was weird to be excited, I'm never excited about anything, including things I should really be excited about.

16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
I don't listen to most mainstream music, but rediscovering Rita Pavone's Viva la pappa con pomodoro through those Heineken commercials on TV was definitely a big deal. That's one incredible earworm.

However, if I had to pick an actual 2015 song, this did not do well at the 2015 Eurovision, likely because its rich instrumentation was barely audible live and the singer's wedding dress and headphones combo was slightly confusing until I read up on its background.

And yes, I know that Charles Mason co-wrote the lyrics, but the concept remains important, plus the composer co-wrote it.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) Happier or sadder? Happier.
b) Fatter or skinnier? FAR skinnier.
c) Richer or poorer? About the same.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Work.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Does the incredible 50-day heatwave count? I don't want to go through that ever again, thank you.

20. How do you plan to spend Christmas?
That's a touchy subject, because my family is dysfunctional on dad's side and mom's side has gone way small town in a negative sense at this point. I kinda want us to go out to a pet-friendly place and eat out.

21. Did you fall in love in 2015?
That's some oversimplifying right there.

22. How many one night stands?
Not for me.

23. What was your favourite TV program?
I liked Lekoviti šou, which was cancelled without any explanation. A comedian was pretending to operate on people who would otherwise be fascinating in any sane society, but were seen problematic here.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I am trying not to hate this one person I groomed myself into defending and adoring over years, but it's hard. This person makes me sick at least once per week. I have a problem with what this person has been doing recently and the way they have been doing it.

I feel betrayed by somebody this year, somebody whom I probably saw as a great person.

There's a bunch of people on this enormous large forum I visit that really, really need a better grasp of reality.

Nevertheless, hate is a strong word.

25. What was the best book you read?
I didn't read any. My concentration issues persist and annoy me bigtime, I need to do something about my strabismus, too.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery of the year?
If last.fm is anything to judge by, I got into Emma Marrone unexpectedly, after years of ignoring her music. But really, I like a lot of it.

27. What did you want and get?
Some peace on certain things. This is probably where a younger me would say that it's not enough, but in a year like 2015, it's not only enough, but more than enough.

28. What did you want and not get?
I gave up on a summer vacation. Going in one direction while thousands of displaced people are going another would have been wrong.

29. What was your favourite film of this year?
I saw a total of one 2015 film in cinema. I also saw our candidate for the Oscar on TV. So, not much to choose from?!

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Measured my blood pressure wrong - not realising it was in kPa and not mm...and then mom did the same and we both thought we would get heart attacks, so we spent the rest of the day freaking out about it. Weird, but true.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
The reflective period may have been too long, but yeah, I'm not unsatisfied or anything. I didn't miss any opportunity or anything.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
I can finally wear anything I want! And that may not be what you want me to wear.

33. What kept you sane?
Own determination.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I believe this answer was always the same, even when I claimed it was not.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
Was there any that didn't? 2015 was frightening!

36. Who do you miss?
I wonder where my pal Katie is. I hear from her once every 18 months or so and I always get incredibly worried.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
I technically met all my new 2015 people in 2014 or 2013. But the friendships I built this year are much deeper than many before.

38. What was the best thing you ate?
I have this obsession with medium beef steak, gorgonzola dressing and veggie wrap from a restaurant called Garden Food. I want one right now, as a matter of a fact. I always want one.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015?
What you convinced yourself of seeing may not be what you see and what it is.

If you have doubts about somebody from day one, they're probably not meant to be your friend.

There is no use running away from people, places and things that made you who you are. One day, you'll find yourself coming back.

Do not take advice from anybody who does not listen and tells their own story before you tell them yours.

Do not be close to anybody who won't honour your boundaries, triggers and feelings in general.

It's OK to be somebody's number two in whatever. But when they're constantly talking about it, you're their number 22, they're immature and they're keeping you hanging on.

Do not have enormous expectations of either yourself your others.

The most mild-mannered people may not be conservative at all. Same goes for deeply religious ones. Perhaps they just don't show it.

Eat healthy, your life will be so much better.

Bicycles or running shoes are actually a geek's best friends. Down with the fat geek stereotype!

Be genuinely kind when necessary and only polite otherwise.

Don't hold grudges when people are stupid, hold them when they know what they're doing and when they do it deliberately.

Nothing is ever over.

    I fancy many celebrities.
