November 3, 2010 » “Make me some new buttons, those I stole from you are old!”

Earlier this year, the owner of Slovakian RHCP fansite (which looks kinda bad in terms of design) asked me to exchange links with Invisible Movement. His email got somehow lost in a hurry and yesterday, I found it, linked his site and headed over his page with links, solely to realise that he's using some old, old buttons that Mira and I made back in 2004-2005 for totally different purposes.

I was not really surprised, as this niche is generally lacking brains, originality and whatnot, but I thought I'd point out the obvious:
- A button saying "Red Hot Chili Peppers" won't make the person who sees it think that the website they'll land on is in Slovakian language.
- If the site owner so keen of having the other guy in the website header already, why did he keep buttons with John Frusciante on them?
- I have no problem with people taking something I made long before I was capable of what I'm capable now, but if they don't try to make something themselves, they will NEVER learn.

So, I tried to explain my point, nicely. Shame, Serbian and Slovakian have a lot in common, yet I had to use English.

Why are you using the buttons my friend and I made for another site, years ago? O_O I don't mind, in fact I'm a bit flattered, it's just that they don't clearly state what your website is about. You should probably put the actual site address on the banner, so people would know that it's a Slovakian website, not that it's RHCP on the button, as that's already obvious. :)

He responds, about a day later:

Thanks for exchange - change.

And Yet I think.

Can you with me change better banner? I think 100 px × 50 px , and I can save this your image on left - and there I have Fan stránky - on my site.
And you save me 100 px × 50 px there where you have it.

hmm?

From what I understood, I am supposed to make him new banners, in exchange for putting one of my buttons in the left sidebar? Uh...I don't think he got this right. But this is my giggle of the day.

  2. I think not even Google Translator speaks like that. Tell him to write to you in Slovakian because I'm pretty sure it will be better to understand. Even better: ignore him. He's proved he doesn't deserve your time.
