Zec na putu, veverica na radaru / Rabbit In The Way, Squirrel On The Radar

! This post was written long ago. What you're reading is not necessarily how I feel about things in 2016. This blog was started by an 18-year-old in 2001. Please, keep that in mind before you freak out.

I started this on the 10th of September and I continued and finished it today. Next to Winged Froggy, it's probably the only one that could pass as children's poetry.

A squirrel and B rabbit live in the Nowhereland, in the respected communities of squirrels and rabbits; which appear to be ignorant towards each other. Even the narrator herself explains at the very end, that everybody would expect a rule-free life in Nowhereland and squirrels and rabbits creating a mixed speecies; but that such a thing is never going to happen.

The very, very beginning was inspired by Fabrizio de Andre yet again, this time it's his song, "Sally". And yes, one might say there's a tiny hint of Lewis Carol and Robert Cormier. But this story features a much serious case of rejection based on identity, name and customs.

Fairy-tales are indeed different when you place them in a place full of incredible props. Many thanks to my friend Ivan Zorić who suggested using a crossbow, though that's probably the only thing one cannot find in the Nowhereland.

Ha.
Ha-ha-ha!

Mama i ja živimo u brvnari,
sa svim drugim vevericama,
one ne vole što me zanimaju zerrrrrcovi.
No, povremeno, ja tebe tražim,
i briga me za sve ostale zečeve.
Zec kao zec,
sem ako to nisi ti.

Igrali smo žmurke,
brojala sam do 8309,
u međuvremenu su svi oko mene nestali,
sve je zaraslo u korov
i kad sam stigla do 8310
krenula sam da te tražim.
I opet.
I opet.
I opet.
I opet.

I čujem nešto,
tapa-tapa-tap,
tapa-tapa-tap,
monotono poput detlića.
Skačem na noge lagane,
uh, opet ti.
OPET TI.

I čuješ nešto,
tapa-tapa-tap,
tapa-tapa-tap,
dosadno poput detlića.
Skačeš na noge lagane,
uh, opet ja.
OPET JA.

I pronašla sam baš visoku ruševinu.
Popela sam se skroz gore, gore, gore.

Najzad mir i tišina.
Nema onog...šta on beše? Jazavac?

I čujem nešto,
tapa-tapa-tap,
tapa-tapa-tap,
dosadno poput detlića,
pa sve glasnije i glasnije,
TAPA-TAPA-TAP,
TAPA-TAPA-TAP.
Pogledala sam dole, videla sam ceo naš mali svet,
Dvorac smrti na horizontu,
polja išarana pogrešnomzvezdom,
močvaru iz koje su se rađali robovi,
i tebe.

Ima da te se otarasim.
Uzela sam samostrel i naciljala te,
sad ćeš nestati jednom zauvek,
nema više
dođeš-odeš,
dođeš-odeš,
ima da odeš!
I opalilo je!

Ha.
Ha-ha-ha!

I čujemo nešto,
tapa-tapa-tap,
tapa-tapa-tap,
dosadno poput detlića.
Glupi radar - pokvaren, a radi.
Da, opet mi.
OPET MI.

I stigli smo do Grada,
iščitala sam njegovo ime.
Onda si ga i ti pročitao,
i opet razrogačio oči.

"Ovo je Grad. I nema nikoga.
Ono je Dvorac smrti. I zbog njega ne možemo napolje.
Ono tamo je Šuma.
Ja sam zec.
TEŠKO MENI, PA TI SI VEVERICA!"

I sa onim kljakavim repom,
zaždio si natrag u šumu.
Jeste, ja sam veverica.
Ja sam ta veverica.
Izgleda da je to moj najveći problem.
Izgleda da je to moj jedini problem.

Ovo je Nigdezemlja. I nema nikoga,
sem nas veverica, njih zečeva,
svi misle da smo do sad postali Veverečevi,
možda čak i Zeverice,
ali čuda se ne dešavaju,
jer se uvek pojavi neko
ko se seti kako se zovemo.

Rabbit In The Way, Squirrel On The Radar

Mother said: "Don't play in the forest. The trees, they bite."
Mother said: "Don't fish in the lake. The fish are huge."
Mother said a lot.
Mother said that a bunny is coming there
And he's veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery stupid.
On top of it all, that bunny's got no ears.
Ha.
Ha-ha-ha!

Mother and I, we live in a log cabin,
With all the other squirrels,
They don't appreciate my interest in rrrrrabbits.
But every once in a while, I search for you,
And I don't care about all the other rabbits.
A rabbit is a rabbit just like any other,
Unless it's you.

We were playing hide-and-seek,
I counted up to 8309,
in the meantime, everything around me was gone,
weeds covered it all
And when I reached 8310,
I started looking for you.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
And we keep on searching for each other in the dark,
Finding each other and convincing ourselves it wasn't so.

Every time I hope to find someone else,
Every time, I hope.

And I hear something,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
As monotoneous as a woodpecker.
I'm jumping on my feet.
Uh, it's you again.
YOU, AGAIN!

Every time you hope to find someone else,
Every time, you hope.

And you hear something,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
As monotoneous as a woodpecker.
You're jumping on my feet.
Uh, it's me again.
ME, AGAIN!

I was fed up with all of that,
I wanted to hide somewhere where you won't find me,
I wanted to hide somewhere where I won't find you.
I was wandering through the forest, though trees bite there.
I was crossing the pond and river, though fish are huuuuge there.
And I found a really tall ruin.
I climbed all the way up, up, up.

Finally, peace and quiet.
There's no...what is he, again? A badger?

And then I realised I climbed on top of a radar.
And I hear something.
Tappa-tappa-tap,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
As monotoneous as a woodpecker,
Louder and louder,
TAPPA-TAPPA-TAP,
TAPPA-TAPPA-TAP.
I looked down and saw our entire little world,
The Castle Of Death on the horizon,
Fields painted wrongstar,
The swamp that gave birth to slaves,
And you.

I'll get rid of you.
I got a crossbow and aimed it at you,
Now you'll disappear once and for all,
No more
Coming and going,
Coming and going,
Only going!
And it fired!

I jumped off the radar, onto a pile of leaves,
And dashed towards the forest, to make sure you're gone.
I found you with arrow through your tail,
You could not move.
I missed you,
I only got you grounded.
You opened your eyes wide,
After all, you're a rabbit,
And rabbits are rabbits.
Ha.
Ha-ha-ha!

I'm setting you free, we're heading towards the City,
For the first time, I grabbed your paw,
What would they all say if they saw me with the rrrrabbit?

And we hear something,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
Tappa-tappa-tap,
As monotoneous as a woodpecker.
Stupid radar - broken, yet working.
Uh, it's us again.
US, AGAIN!

Every time we hope to find someone else,
Every time, we hope.

And we arrived to the City,
I read out its name.
Then you read it too,
And opened your eyes wide yet again.

"This is the City. And there's no one.
That's the Castle Of Death, the reason we can't get out.
That over there is the forest.
I'm the rabbit.
ALAS, YOU'RE A SQUIRREL!"

And with that poor tail,
You ran back to the forest.
Yes, I am a squirrel.
I am the squirrel.
Looks like that's my biggest problem.
Looks like that's my only problem.

This is the Nowhereland. And there's no one
But us squirrels, them rabbits,
Everyone'd think we became Squibbits by now,
Maybe even Rarrels,
But miracles don't happen,
Because someone would always appear,
And remind us what's the name we were given.

  1. Ivan Zoric says...

I see that crossbow opened up some new scenes as well.
    Nice!

  2. Iva Tanacković says...

    I zahvaljujem ti, vidiš?

Imala sam čak i međuideju...da ukokam Malog Zlog Vuka, no odustala sam, nekako je previše očigledno.
